59 year old Tommy Hughes impressed at the Rotterdam marathon
The Irish long-distance runner Tommy Hughes cut over seven minutes off the Irish M55 marathon record, clocking 2:30:15 in Rotterdam on Sunday, April 7th. Tommy Hughes (born 8 January 1960) represented Ireland in the marathon at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, clocking 2:32:55. Amazingly, over 26 years later, his time was nearly three minutes faster than his Olympic performance.
In the correspondence with Tommy, he added that his time at Rotterdam marathon was a single age world record for a 59 year old beating Yoshihisa Hosaka’s (JAPAN) time of 2 hours 34 minutes 23 seconds set in 2008 at Fukuoka marathon Japan. Tommy’s goals are to break the over 60s marthon world record 2:36:30 in the next year and still get under two hours 30 when he is 60.
