EMA best masters awards 2018 in combined events : Marianne Maier and Valdis Cela
EMA elected Valdis Cela as European Best Male Master Athlete 2018 as well as best in combined events.
Marianne Maier (W75, Austria) improved at WMAC in Málaga the world record W75 in shot put and two European records in the heptathlon and 80m hurdles. She was world champion in heptathlon, shotput and 80m hurdles und won in Málaga silver medals in long jump and high jump.
Valdis Cela (M70, Latvia) achieved two M70 world records in the decathlon and the penthatlon (indoor) and a European record in the pole vault. In 2018 he was honored three times as World champion and European champion.

With eleven competitions, including seven in the heptathlon, Marianne Maier completed a varied program at WMAC in Malaga. With 11.80m in 2018 she had already improved the shot put world record by 70 cm and set in Malaga again 32 cm on it.
On her 75th birthday on 25.12.2017, Marianne Maier looked back on winning 100 medals at international Masters championships, including 52 gold medals. In Malaga, the number has increased by three. Shortly after her birthday party on 30.12.2017, she achieved a width of 11.74m according to the Austrian Athletics Association (ÖLV). This is 35 cm better than the currently registered W75 indoor world record.
Marianne Maier also volunteers as an athletics trainer in her club Tecnoplast TS Höchst. The Austrian Athletics Association honored her three years ago at the “Austrian Athletics Awards 2016”.
