EMA Off-Road Running Circuit 2026

Presentation

European Masters Athletics (EMA) is proud to announce the inaugural experimental edition of the EMA Off-Road Running Circuit, a circuit dedicated to Master athletes featuring mountain, vertical, and off-road running events. The League’s objectives are:

  • To provide optimal conditions for athletes to achieve outstanding performances.
  • To increase competition opportunities in a stimulating and diverse environment.
  • To foster greater interaction and cultural exchange among athletes.
  • To offer a broad range of participation options throughout the season.
  • To promote the diversity of the participating athletes.

The organizational focus will be on delivering well-structured, efficient events that create the best conditions for participants to excel and enjoy the experience.

Participation

Participation in the EMA Off-Road Running Circuit is open to all athletes who meet the Masters Off-Road running criteria, specifically:
– Aged 35–79 years, unless otherwise restricted by local rules for long-distance events.
– Licensed by their National Federation, in accordance with World Masters Athletics (WMA) rules.

The EMA Off-Road Running Circuit is not a championship; therefore:
– Athletes do not officially represent their countries, and
– The use of national uniforms is optional.

Participation is also open to non-European athletes, who are eligible for both individual event prizes and final circuit awards.

Rankings

Event Rankings
Each Local Organizing Committee (LOC) may host one or more events (uphill, vertical, mountain run up & down, trail, etc.).
Event prizes and category awards will be given according to local regulations. Each event will be featured in a dedicated section on the EMA website.
LOCs may, at their discretion, allow athletes under 35 or over 80 to compete and be awarded locally.
However, for the EMA Circuit’s final rankings, only Masters athletes aged 35–79 will be considered.

Final Circuit Rankings
To qualify for the final EMA rankings, an athlete must:
– Participate in at least two events, held in different locations.

Scoring System
– The winner of each event (overall and age category) receives 1 point.
– The second receives 2 points, the third receives 3 points, and so on.
– EMA will consider each athlete’s two best performances from different events when calculating the final standings.
– Each athlete can participate to more than one event in the same stage (example uphill and long distance), if offered by the Organiser. But only the best performance will be considered for the general ranking.

Ranking Categories
– Overall Men and Women (Top 3)
– Age Categories (M/W 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75)

Tie-break Rules
In the event of a tie:

  • The athlete with the higher finishing position in head-to-head events will be ranked higher.
  • If still tied, the athlete with more total races completed in the Circuit will be ranked higher.
