W80 World Record in Long Jump by Rietje Dijkman
Long jump: Rietje Dijkman NLD VET 80 03.49
The young artistic group at the opening ceremony formed a directional arrow. This symbol to the goal or the top was followed early Monday morning by the 80-year-old Dutch woman in the long jump with a great world record in almost the same place. With her jumping distance of 3.49 meters she improved the previous world record of the Canadian Christa Bortignon by an incredible 21 centimeters. At the same time, Germany’s Christiane Schmalbruch lost her W80 European record. The photo shows Rietje Dijkman pensive and concentrated between the jumps. Her fifth jump was the world record.
Further final decisions were made on Monday in the 3000m walk for the over 45s, in the high jump and long jump and outside in the men’s hammer throw. Rüdiger Möhring, the gold medallist in the M55 age group, he threw the hammer 50.45 metres, raved about the excellent conditions of the facilities in beautiful weather and summed up with relief: “It is wonderful that the long break from competition due to the corona pandemic EMA has offered championships again.”
EMA President Kurt Kaschke had already emphasised in the opening ceremony who, among others, are to be thanked for hosting the championships: Ricardo Rio (Mayor of Braga), Sameiro Araújo (LOC President), Jorge Vieira (President FPA), Luis Jesus (ANAV President), Manuel Pacheco (Sport Association of Braga), Major Tiago Pires (Regimento Cavalaria 6), Victor Dias (State Secretary Representant)
