In Madrid, Valdis Cela became European Champion four times. He also won all disciplines 60 hs, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1000m on his world record in the pentathlon.
In Malaga, Valdis Cela completed his three gold medals in long jump, triple jump and hurdles with two silver medals in the high jump (1.51) and pole vault (3.00). In both he reached the same height as the winner and fell only due to a higher number of failed attempts on the 2nd place.
The Latvian Valdis Cela was the first M70 in the decathlon surpassing the 8000-point mark. He improved the world record at „Stendaler Hanse Cup“, Standal/Germany, by 202 points.
