Six full days of competitions, opening and closing ceremonies, 1091 athletes/event, 17
Countries in Machico and 29 Countries in Porto Santo, many accompanyng people,
ceremonies and time to enjoy and have fun: despite the logistical difficulties and the
increase in costs due to the coincidence with the Flower Festival in Funchal, the Machico
2024 Off Road Running championship and the Porto Santo 2024 Non Stadia
championship can be considered two great and successful events!
And this thanks to the athletes, thanks to the great effort made by the Team of AARAM
(Association of Madeira Athletics) led by Egidio Olim, thanks to the LOC led with Luis
Policarpo Gouveia and thanks to the EMA Team, with the Council represented by VP
Competition Giovanni Tracanelli, VP Finances Ercan Ozkan and the General Secretary
Clarisse Duarte.
Two championships, with mountain running, vertical run, trail run, road race, cross country,
race walk and nordic walking competitions, mean an incredible technical, logistical, IT,
financial effort for the Local Organising Committee, and a huge number of volunteers and
medical and safety officers.
EMORRC 2024 MACHICO
The European Masters Off Road Running championship Machico 2024 started with the
official presentation at the Machico city hall and finished with the closing ceremony and the
passage of the fleg to the next Organiser, the city of Nicolosi in the beautiful Sicily island –
Italy. In the middle three great events: the mountain run, the trail run and, for the first time,
the vertical run. The athletes had the opportunity to compete but also to enjoy the beauties
and the nature of Madeira, an authentic paradise.
Woman and Man of the championships? Not only one, but to remember the exploits of
Shaban Mustafa (BUL, three gold medals), Barbara Taibon, Monica Carl, Matthieu
Gandolfi, the 2023 EBM Charlotte Cotton and Cedric Mariethoz, Martin Alvarez Espinar
and the Ironwoman Karin Freitag, winner of the trail run but gold medalist in road race and
race walk too.
EMACNS 2024 PORTO SANTO
Similar program for the Non Stadia championship, with opening and closing ceremony in
the beautiful center of Vila Baleira, just in front of the magnificent beach of Porto Santo
Island.
Exciting challenges in Porto Santo too: 10K road race, half marathon, 10K and 20K race
walk, cross country relay and, for the first time out of Italy, the nordic walking
championship. To remind the participation of a delegation of the Vatican City Athletics. And
many “heroes” in Porto Santo too: the one already mentioned Karin Freitag, the overall
winners of both race walk competitions Bianca Schenker (GER) and Tomasz Lipiec (POL),
Andreia Santos, Sergio Salinero, the Figueiredo brothers and the Nunes brothers. Closing
ceremony without passage of the flag: the EMA Council is still evaluating the biddings and
the manifestations of interest. Stay tuned, the next Organiser will be announced before
next August.
