Funchal was the focus of European Masters athletics attention this weekend, and for the first time ever we were accorded full media coverage of all our races.
We congratulate and thank the Organising Committee, led by the President Policarpo Gouveia, and all his team for their effort and enthusiasm organising such an international event during this difficult and unprecedented time.
The Championships opened on 29 October with the 10km run and race walking; cross-country relays on Friday 30, the half marathon over a testing circuitous course and 20/30km walks on Saturday, in 26°C with a slight welcome breeze.
Some athletes decided or were unable to travel due to the COVID-19 virus restrictions, and getting a full team in some age categories proved challenging.
As we go to Press on Saturday, the 20km has just finished, won in 1.53.37sec by W45 Sandra Silver from Portugal who crossed the finish line well clear of the field.
