The Madeira Athletics Association has a great deal of experience in organising mountain races and had chosen a course worthy of international championships. Pure mountain runners gratefully and happily accepted the challenge in the unique landscape of Madeira.

The 8.5-kilometre-long course led through laurel and eucalyptus forests from Ribeira de Janera to Fanal. About 950 metres in altitude had to be overcome. Heavy rain during the night made the steep ascents even more challenging due to the partly slippery ground and deep puddles of water.

Shortly before the start of the mountain race, each participant was measured for fever. It was obligatory to wear a mask until the start line and after the finish. The start took place at intervals according to age groups. During the run the masks could be taken off. Of the 66 mountain runners present, 65 reached the finish line, 47 men and 18 women.
