From Rome 1960 to Madeira 2025 – A Legend of the Ages
European Masters Athletics is proud to announce that the 2025 EBM Special Award has been presented to a man who defines the very soul of our sport: Östen Edlund.
While EMA recognizes many “Best Masters” each year across various event categories, the Special Award is reserved for those whose careers transcend the record books. Östen Edlund is not merely a champion of the present; he is a living bridge to the golden history of athletics.
A Career Born in the Golden Era
Östen’s journey began in 1949. By 1960, he was representing Sweden on the greatest stage of all: the Rome Olympic Games.
Competing in the discus circle alongside icons like Rink Babka, Adolfo Consolini, and fellow legendary master thrower Carmelo Rado, Östen proved that size is no barrier to excellence. Often described as “too small” for a traditional thrower, he silenced critics with a lightning-fast technique and a mastery of physics that remains his trademark today.
The Great Return
After a storied elite career, Östen returned to the Masters circuit in 2008 in Ljubljana. It was there that he reunited with his old friend and rival, Carmelo Rado. While Rado may have taken the “revenge” win that day, the moment was about something far greater: the rekindling of a lifelong friendship and a passion for competition that never faded.
A 90-Year-Old Force of Nature
In his eighties, Östen proved his dominance once again, securing a world title at the 2015 WMAC in Lyon. However, 2025 has been a year for the history books. At 90 years of age, Östen’s performance at the EMACS in Madeira and in other meetings was nothing short of miraculous:
- 6 Medals won at the European Championships
- Outdoor World Records in Shot Put, Hammer, Weight Throw, and Throws Pentathlon.
- Indoor Records in shot put and weight throw.
An Inspiration to Generations
Östen Edlund’s story is one that deserves a book of its own. He is the ultimate example of competitive longevity and the “Masters Spirit.” His dedication is a powerful reminder that hard work and determination have no expiration date.
