Ahead of the world championships opening Friday in Doha, Quatar, the
62-year-old IAAF President Sebastian Coe was elected for a second term
at the 52nd IAAF Congress on Wednesday (25.09.19).
The Colombian Ximena Restrepo, Olympic bronze medallist in 1992 over 400
m, was elected the first female Vice President in the IAAF’s history.
Further Vice Presidents were Sergey Bubka, Geoffrey Gardner and Nawaf
Bin Mohammed Al Saud. The newly elected European members of the IAAF
Council are Antti Pihlakoski (FIN), Anna Riccardi (ITA), Sylvia Barlag
(NED), Raul Chapado (ESP)and Dobromir Karamarinov (BUL).
During Coe’s presidency in November 2015, Russia was suspended from the
IAAF for a widespread doping scandal. The ban was renewed on Monday. The
suspension also applies to the Masters athletics.
