The city and region have great experience in hosting large events, from tournaments to huge concerts. We wish to host the European masters athletics championships- If we win the bid, we can organize very compact championships, Henrik Gidlund from Region Skåne told europen-masters-athletics.org.The city of Malmö has a population of some 301.000 inhabitants, on the banks of the Bay of Øresund. Two international airports are just half an hour from the city center, Malmö airport and the more famous Copenhagen International Airport, Kastrup, in Denmark.
Malmö – Copenhagen region is considered internationally as one of the most exciting regions in northern Europe. Thanks to the Øresund bridge, people can live in Malmö and work in Copenhagen, and visa- versus.
If the Swedish bidding comity, consisting of the Skåne Athletics Association, the local athletic club MAI, Malmö City and the Region Skåne, seek and get an offer to organize the 2020 indoor championships, can they guarantee compact games. The Malmö sports Complex is one of the largest in Europe. The heart of the complex is the Malmö stadium build for the 1958 FIFA World Cup. 5 and 10 km walk and winter throwing can be organized at the stadium.
The indoors athletic arena, The Atleticum, has a 4 lane 200 meter track. The arena hosted the indoor European masters championships in 1999, and has been renovated in recent years. Next to the Atleticum is the Kombihallen were some of the jumps and throws (shot and weight) may take place.
The stadium comity of EMA has challenged the bidding comity to look at the possibility to expand the number of lanes from four to six, on the 200 meter long track.
The council of EMA will make their decision of whom they will award the championships later this year.
